AFTES XVIth INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS

Our Technical Director Vittorio Manassero will attend in Paris, from 6 to 8 september 2021, the XVIth International Congress of AFTES (Association Française des Tunnel et de l'Espace Souterrain). He will present an ePoster, in the framework of Theme C "innovation in building underground structures", session "meeting geotechnical challanges: improving soil characteristics".
The title of the paper included within the Congress proceedings and illustrated by ePoster is "Some practical recommendations concerning Artificial Ground Freezing for underground works (Quelques recommandations pratiques dans le cadre de la congélation artificielle du sol pour les travaux souterrains)". The paper deals with some practical recommendations for the ground freezing applied to geotechnical works, according to lessons learned by the author from a large number of Artificial Ground Freezing projects, acting at first as technical director for geotechnical contractors and then as an independent expert consultant. The recommendations deal mainly with ensuring the continuity of the shape of the frozen shell, with the freeze-lances, the distribution manifold, and the monitoring and processing of temperature data. The scope of the recommendations is to provide the reader with instruments which help to increase the likelihood of technical success, as well as to reduce construction costs and time.
A second paper, where our Technical Director is co-author, is included within the Congress proceedings and its title is "Ligne 14, Saint-Ouen, Utilisation de la congélation des sols pour le passage sous une gare en service". This paper deals with the construction of a rectangular tunnel, 11.5 m wide, 7.5 m high and 26 m long, crossing under the Saint-Ouen RER C Station in service, within the framework of the extension of the Paris Subway Line 14 toward North. The tunnel was excavated below the water-table, under the protection of a frozen soil shell and Underground Consulting was espert advisor to the Joint Venture of contractors in charge of the works (Spie Batignolles TPI, Chantiers Modernes Construction, TPI, Dodin Campenon Bernard, Botte Fondations, Spie Fondations).
