ITA-AITES WTC 2016 (WORLD TUNNEL CONGRESS)
SAN FRANCISCO (USA), 22-28 APRIL 2016

Our Technical Director Vittorio Manassero will attend the WORLD TUNNEL CONGRESS 2016 in San Francisco (USA) from 23rd to 28th April 2016.

During the Congress, as part of the “Tunnelling Advances through Innovation” session, on Tuesday 26th April Mr. Manassero will give a presentation entitled “An advanced shaft construction method to install ten ventilation shafts, as applied in the Naples Metro project”. The presentation will cover the design and construction of 10 ventilation shafts at Naples Metro Line No. 1 using the VSM (Vertical Shaft-sinking Machine) mechanized method.

VSM is a recent innovation in mechanized technology for boring and simultaneous lining by sinking of vertical circular shafts, with inner dia. from 4.5 to 10.0 m. This construction method, as well as enabling a faster and safer boring compared with conventional techniques, allows the whole sinking to be completed without operators having to descend into the shaft and without lowering the surrounding water-table. This means a considerable increase in safety for operators and a significant reduction in the effects on the surrounding environment, particularly relevant when operating in urban areas.
