Our C.E.O. and Technical Director Vittorio Manassero attended as speaker the 11th International Symposium on Ground Freezing, in London on October 10 through 12, and the Workshop / Journée Scientifique et Technique du Comité Français de Méchanique des Sols et Géotechnique on Artificial Ground Freezing, in Strasbourg (France) on November 17th at the Ecole et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre (Amphithéatre de la Manufacture des Tabacs à la Kruteneau).

11th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON GROUND FREEZING

At the Symposium, Mr. Manassero gave two lectures. The first one was part of the Session 4B, on October 10th (13h30 - 16h00) and was entitled "Some Practical Recommendations on the Artificial Ground Freezing Process"; the second lecture was part of the Session 11, on October 12th (13h30 - 16h00) and was entitled "The Importance of Quality Control and Monitoring for Artificial Ground Freezing".

Following a 17-year hiatus, the 11th International Symposium on Ground Freezing (ISGF) returned to the UK for the first time since 1988 to present the latest research, innovations and concerns as well as challenges and opportunities in the fields of Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) as well as the mechanics of Frozen Earth.
Spread across three days, the symposium provided a forum for ground freezing practitioners across the world including engineers, contractors, academics, and scientists to meet and exchange ideas, theories, and project case histories. Since the last conference held in Maine (USA) in 2006, Artificial Ground Freezing has grown in popularity and its application has expanded to projects including shafts, tunnels including cross passages and large barrier walls with increased attention to soil-structure interaction in urban areas.
The technology itself has advanced tremendously in the last twenty years. The development of numeric modeling for heat transfer and structural analysis, more powerful and efficient refrigeration plants and new concepts in instrumentation have changed the approach to ground freezing projects. Yet, with these advancements the basic theories and mechanics have not changed. A new generation of engineers, project managers, academics and researchers have emerged and continue to advance the technology.
With these innovations and a new wave of professionals entering the industry, the key aim of ISGF was to provide an opportunity for professionals from all six continents to meet and exchange ideas, participate in discussion, and share experiences on not only AGF, but the mechanism of frozen earth (taken from https://www.iom3.org/events-awards/11th-international-symposium-on-ground-freezing.html website).
Workshop on Artificial Ground Freezing organized by the
French Committee of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
Strasbourg (France), 17 November 2023
The workshop was dedicated entirely to the Artificial Ground Freezing technique, it had experts from various European countries as speakers and offered a detailed presentation of this soil improvement technique, of the specific laboratory tests necessary for its design, of the design and of the monitoring on the existing structures and utilities nearby. Research works and case studies in France and abroad were also be presented, as well as an overview on the work in progress for the new European code on this technique.
As part of the Workshop, from 11:50 and 12:15, Mr. Manassero gave a lecture entitled "Some practical Considerations on Equipment and Methods for Artificial Ground Freezing". The full presentation in PDF format may be downloaded from this LINK.
